Neelum valley is spread over a distance of 240 km from the Chehla Bandi Bridge to Taobat on north side of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Kashmir. This valley is as beautiful as its name.

Neelum Valley comprises Neelum District, the headquarters of which is Athmuqam. Its two tehsils are Athmuqam and Sharda. Its total area is 3621 sq km. Its height is 5299 feet above sea level. Neelum Valley has a population of 191,251 as of 2017 census. There are 360 villages in Neelum Valley. Neelum Valley is located right next to the Line of Control.

Neelum valley is 144 kilometers long and it comprises high mountains, dense forests and attractive gardens. Due to lack of good roads, very few tourists come here.

Neelum Valley is one of the most beautiful valleys of Kashmir (Pakistan) where there are rivers, large streams of clean and cold water, fountains, forests and green mountains. There are flowing water and waterfalls falling from high mountains, whose sharp milky water flows over the roads and hitting with huge rocks, it finally joins the Neelum River.

Neelum valley is connected to Muzaffarabad and other parts of the country by Neelum Road which leads to Kail. The road from Muzaffarabad to Athmuqam is in good condition and suitable for all types of vehicles, but the road from Keran to Kail is not in good condition and not suitable for low-floor vehicles.

Passenger wagons run every 30 minutes from Muzaffarabad to Athmuqam and Sharda. Buses ply daily between Muzaffarabad and Kail when weather is fine. Jeeps and horses are also available to access the remote areas of valley. There is a dirt road from Kail to Taobat which is also accessible by jeeps.

In winter Neelum Road is closed due to heavy snowfalls before Kail and access to the upper reaches of the valley becomes very difficult. However, local people restore the road with self-help.

Communication in Neelum Valley

Special Communication Organization (SCO), a subsidiary of Pakistan Army, provides telephone and internet services in various cities and towns of the valley. At present, SCO has started operations in most of the Neelum Valley and has started service in Jowar Bariyan, Kundal Shahi, Kutton Jagran, Athmuqam, Sharda, Dowarian, Kail, Grace and Taobat.

Along with this, internet facility has also been made available in the valley. 3G service has already started in Sharda and Kail, while other areas are also working on the service.

Neelum Valley Tourist Guidelines

👉  If you are willing to come to Neelum Valley, keep the following things in mind:

  Neelum Valley is a hilly area so you should come to Neelum Valley only in summer. From May to September, you will be safe to travel to Neelum Valley anytime. Otherwise, if you want to travel in winter, then you should only travel up to Athmuqam.

  A trip to the main tourist spots of Neelum Valley is possible only in summer. All the areas beyond Athmuqam can be seen only in summer.

  In Neelum Valley, even in summer, it often rains and the cold increases, so it is essential to keep warm clothes with you.

  Also check weather report etc. before coming to the valley as road is closed due to landslides during rainy days.

Mobile and Internet networks

Both SCOM and Ufone networks are currently operational in Neelum Valley. If you want to run internet in Neelum Valley, you can only run it with SCOM and PTCL Wi-Fi. Ufone SIM is limited to call only in Neelum Valley.

Best Route to reach Neelum Valley

If you want to come to Neelum Valley from Pakistan, you have to come to Rawalpindi first. From Rawalpindi you have to come to Muzaffarabad. You can come to Muzaffarabad by two routes; via Murree Road or via Hazara Road.

After reaching Muzaffarabad, you can reach Neelum Valley from Neelum Road.

If you have your own vehicle, it may take you around 1.5 ~ 2.5 hours from Rawalpindi to Muzaffarabad. If you don't have your own car, it could take you three or more hours.

If you want to come to Azad Kashmir (Pakistan) from any other country, after landing at Islamabad Airport you come to Rawalpindi and after that you can go to any place of Azad Kashmir.
